Trawling through etsy again, this bold orange orb table lamp from the 1970's caught my eye.

This style is now everywhere in modern lamp design and I hadn't realised it was a classic form the age of bell bottoms, Bay City Rollers and disco!

As an antique, this lamp is a one off, but I think I'd reather have the real thing than a modern copy.

Modoluce Lost Table Lamp

Stumbled across these wonderfully original table lamps from top italian design house modoluce.

The overall style reminded me a bit of Hannah Nunn's lamps but with less of a crafty, organic feel and more of a sleek urban look.

Called "Lost", these table lamps have a satin finished nickel base and a cloth shade with lycra cover available in a range of single colours.

Again, I think this is modern design at its best - simple, elegant and suitable for use in any home.

I like....

What Were They Thinking? #1

Whilst trawling through a few online table lamp shops, I stumbled across this horror:

Would anyone really have one of these (or perhaps even a matching pair) in their home or has it been manufactured purely for themed restaurants or hotels in the mid-west of the USA?

Words can't begin to express the sheer hideousness of this table lamp come cowboy boot and I won't embarass the store by naming them.

Awful...

Etsy Finds #5 - Modern Square Wood Table Lamp

Wooden table lamps are a special favourite of mine, so when I spotted this wonderfully simple wooden lamp, I had to feature it here.

Made by Atomic Attic, this table lamp appears to be constructed by layering square ply board sheets and then smoothing the outside faces before varnishing.

The finished lamp is very effective especially when paired with a simple square lamp shade.

This is just the type of lamp which would sit sell amongst our other wooden table lamps - I may be in touch!

Etsy Finds #4 - Art Deco Table Lamp & Shade

Art deco is a term that's often thrown around to cover a wide variety of styles but this table lamp from WeeHedgehog on Etsy, is definitely art deco inspired.

I particularly like the lamp shade which as well as complementing this lamp base, would look on a variety of table lamps.

At 2 feet tall and with an 8 inch square footprint, this lamp is quite the statement piece - I could imagine a pair of these at either end of a large console table in the hallway of a hotel perhaps?

At $275, it's not cheap, but sometimes you just have to pay for good quality.

Etsy Finds #3 - Ribbon Shade

One of the most important factors in choosing table lamps is which lampshade to select to complement the lamp base.

There are so many variables: translucency, size, shape, colour and material, that it's sometimes hard to find just the right shade.

This striking large drum ribbon shade from isabelstanley on Etsy is just perfect for a simply monochrome lamp base.

Shown here with a black candlestick base, this shade would look just as at home on a glass ball lamp or with a chrome base.

I absolutely love this shade and may well be in touch with Isabel about supplying some shades to us.

Etsy Finds #2 - Vettel Table Lamp

Perhaps a bit brutal in design for some, the Vettel table lamp by modernindustry proves that table lamps don't have to be soft and cuddly.

The 3"x3" footprint means that there's still plenty of space on a side table to put photos or other objects on display and the heavy steel nature of the lamp will keep it well planted.

I particularly like the hand welded seams which have been left unground - certainly not what you'd want if restoring an old car but just right here.

Simple Table Lamp Design

This table lamp form designer Goncalo Campos is simplicity itself.

A plain wooden plinth with between one and three lampshades casting light onto its surface, there's room to display a treasured object or simply leave the plinth empty to create a striking lighting effect.

Proof that modern table lamp design doesn't have to be pretentious or ironic.

This design could be the inspiration for a hundred DIY designs using recycled plinths and reused lamp shades and light fittings.

Very good indeed.

Etsy Finds #1 - Upcycled Table Lamp

#1 in a series of table lamps found on the popular arts and crafts site Etsy.

Up-cycled Antique Lampstand with Double Shade

This striking lamp is a one off created from an upcycled antique lampstand and new double lamp shade.

The teal paint applied to the the base contrasts beautifully with the black and white damask pattern of the shade and I particularly like the protruding swoop of lamp stand above the shade.

You can buy the lamp here if it's still available!

Vintage Table Lamps For A Modern Home

Spotted this superb brass table lamp on Appartmenttherapy today.

It clearly functions really well as a task light but what a beautiful object it is.

Sadly, it seems to be an antique one-off, but surely someone could manufacture table lamps like these...

John Lewis Fable Lamp

I love John Lewis and if I ever had to have a job, that is where I would want work.

I always keep half and eye open to what they have in stock when it comes to table lamps and I was struck by this lamp today.

The Fable lamp wouldn't look out of place amongst our range of wooden honey pot lamps, having that earthy, organic, almost tactile quality.

Like our lamps, the Fable would look good in contemporary or traditional homes - at about a foot tall, it makes a staement inits own right too.

A beaut!

Get it here at John Lewis.

What a Difference a Shade Makes

Interesting post over at Apartment Therapy today, illustrating how changing the shape, colour and style of shade can rejuvenate dated table lamps.

As you can see, the new shade on the left looks much more modern than the 80's style pleated shade on the right and gives the added benefit of a more pleasing light spray.

See the original article here.

Bloom Table Lamp by Patrick Jouin

Here's a piece of contemporary lamp design that's both beautiful and clever.

The Bloom lamp by Patrick Jouin for MGX, inverts the behaviour of nature's flowers by opening its petals to emit light rather than as a reaction to light.

Its also a table lam p which would look great in modern or traditional homes.

Apparently only 99 were made so good luck getting one!
